Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 Unlocking the Specialist
Level all five classes and build your custom endgame marine.
The Specialist is Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2’s most ambitious class system — a fully customisable endgame role that lets you combine ability fragments from every base class into one marine. But you do not start with it. This guide walks you through the entire unlock process, explains how fragments work, and gives you a practical strategy to reach Specialist readiness as efficiently as possible.
What the Specialist is
The Specialist is not a sixth fixed class. It is a buildbench. Once unlocked, you access a loadout screen where you select major and minor ability fragments drawn from the five base classes — Marauder, Duelist, Machinist, Hunter, and Medic. This means a Specialist can run Marauder’s Rampage perk alongside Machinist’s turret synergy and Medic’s revive speed boost, creating combinations impossible on any base class.
The Specialist’s signature weapon is the L56A3 Smartgun, but you are not locked to it. The class has full access to the weapons pool.
Unlock requirement
You must reach the maximum rank on all five base classes. There is no way to rush this with microtransactions or shortcuts. Each class levels independently through mission completion and Horde runs.
How class levelling works
Every mission completion grants XP to your active class. Horde runs grant significantly more XP per minute than campaign missions due to their intensity and length. Class XP is shared across all difficulties — a Veteran mission gives the same class XP as an Insane mission of the same length.
Each class has a linear progression track with approximately 15 ranks. Early ranks unlock core ability options. Late ranks unlock signature weapons and the most powerful passive perks.
Fragment types
Once a base class is levelled, you unlock its fragments in the Specialist menu. There are two categories:
Major fragments — Large ability nodes. These replace your class ability slot with something from another class. For example, Machinist’s Shredder Bodyguard drone or Hunter’s Particle Beam.
Minor fragments — Small passive bonuses. These slot into a grid alongside major fragments. You can run multiple minor fragments simultaneously, mixing bonuses from different base classes.
The Specialist grid has limited slots. You cannot use every fragment at once. Building an effective Specialist requires choosing a primary role and filling secondary slots with complementary minor fragments.
Efficient levelling strategy
- Pick two classes to main first. Focus on Marauder and Duelist — they are the most straightforward to level because their weapons are effective across all mission types and difficulties.
- Run Horde maps for XP efficiency. A thirty-minute Horde run on Veteran can grant more combined class XP than two full campaign missions. If your squad can sustain deep Horde waves, this is the fastest path.
- Mix in campaign missions for variety. Campaign missions break up the Horde grind and provide weapon credit income to fund loadout experiments.
- Level Machinist third. Machinist’s turret and drone abilities are excellent for Horde survival. Getting this class online early means your Horde runs become more stable, which in turn accelerates all other class XP.
- Level Medic and Hunter last. Both classes are more dependent on specific weapons and team composition. Hunter is exceptionally powerful in the right hands but underperforms in disorganised groups.
Specialist loadout examples
Balanced Horde build Major: Machinist Shredder Bodyguard (holds a lane while you use a primary weapon). Minor: Medic Bedside Manner (faster revives), Marauder Reactive Charges (knockback on melee hits), Duelist Stay on Target (damage ramp).
Aggressive push build Major: Marauder Titan Rockets (room-clearing explosives). Minor: Duelist Mobility (movement speed and stability), Hunter No Mercy (weak-point bonus).
Support build Major: Medic Combat Stims — Adrenaline Surge. Minor: Machinist Cross-Platform Synergy (turret ally damage resist), Duelist Stay on Target.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Specialist without unlocking all five base classes? No. The Specialist remains locked until all five base classes reach maximum rank. Attempting to select the class slot before unlocking shows a progress tracker for each base class.
Do fragments persist between sessions? Yes. Once a fragment is unlocked from a base class, it is permanently available in the Specialist loadout screen. There is no grind to re-unlock fragments within a save file.
Can I respec my Specialist? Yes. In the loadout screen you can swap major and minor fragments freely outside of missions. There is no cost or cooldown for respeccing.
Is the Specialist better than the base classes? Not universally. The Specialist offers flexibility and hybrid builds that base classes cannot match. However, pure specialised builds — a dedicated Marauder or Machinist at maximum rank — will outperform a generalist Specialist in the specific role that class dominates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2.
How long does it take to unlock the Specialist?
For a dedicated player running Veteran Horde sessions, approximately 20-30 hours of gameplay across all five classes. Casual players should expect 40-60 hours.
Can I play as the Specialist in the campaign?
Yes. Once unlocked, the Specialist is available for all mission types including campaign, Horde, and challenge missions.
Do I need to unlock fragments for every save file?
No. Class progression and Specialist unlocks are tied to your account profile, not an individual save slot. They carry over across new campaigns.
Are some fragment combinations overpowered?
Some combinations have synergy that makes them strong in Horde contexts. The developers have indicated they monitor Specialist builds and will balance fragment combinations that consistently break difficulty scaling.
